An oil painting on Masonite by listed Italian-American artist Xavier Barile (1891 – 1981). Featuring an autumnal forest landscape, this work is signed ‘X.J. Barile’ to the lower right. It is presented in a blue wood frame with an off-white liner.
Xavier Barile was born in Italy, and immigrated to New York in 1907. After learning English he studied at Evening Art Classes at Cooper Union Institute in New York and eventually enrolled in the Art Students League, New York City where he studied under John Sloan, Reginald Marsh and Victor Perard. He was part of the informal Ashcan School, a group that painted scenes from daily life in New York’s poorer neighborhoods. He exhibited across the United States, at venues including the Whitney Studio Club, The Kit Kat Club, The Cincinnati Museum, The New Mexico Museum and his work is held in The National Collection of Fine Arts (NCFA) Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.
