Beloved in Cincinnati, Shaw was well-known for his stark prints focusing on urban life. He received his formal education from the Art Academy of Cincinnati, where he would later mentor minority students. His first solo exhibition in 1973 was held at the Miller Gallery in the Cincinnati neighborhood, Hyde Park. A graphic designer for Cincinnati Bell, Shaw would exhibit at the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Contemporary Arts Center (Cincinnati), and the Taft Museum of Art.
