A 1939 Harvard University Porcellian Club group photograph signed by members. The Porcellian Club is an all-male final club at Harvard University, sometimes called the Porc or the P.C. Their mascot was a pig which is shown in this picture. This club was founded around 1791 when a group called the Argonauts began meeting, then in 1794 was renamed after a pig roast at Moores Tavern, to the Pig Club. The club was originally started by a group of thirty students from Massachusetts who wanted to avoid the dining halls at the school by roasting pigs. One prominent member was Leverett A Saltonstall (1882-1979) who was an America lawyer and politician and served three two year terms as the Governor of Massachusetts, and twenty years as a U.S. Senator. (1945-1967). Framed in wood, this vintage photograph is marked Clossons on the reinforced cardboard protective backing. There is a metal wire on the backside for mounting purposes.
