An early 20th-century oil painting on canvas by well-listed Canadian-American artist Charles Paul Gruppe (1860 – 1940). Portrayed in an impressionist manner, this work features a a cow walking down a dirt road lined with autumnal trees and foliage. Signed ‘Chas. P. Gruppe’ to the lower left, the work is presented in a gold-tone gilt and gesso wood frame. Remnants of an inscribed label are adhered to the verso.

Charles Paul Gruppe (1860 – 1940) was born in Canada, and relocated to Rochester, New York as a child. He studied art at Yale University and later received his MFA at Columbia Ueventually. During his young adulthood, he moved to Europe to formally pursue his love of art. He remained in Holland for over two decades and became known for Dutch landscape scenes. The artist eventually moved back to America in the early 1900s, taking an apartment at New York’s famed Carnegie Hall. He would spend his later years painting scenes of Cape Ann, Massachusetts with his son, painter Emile Gruppe.

- to fair; stains, accretion, and surface residue scattered throughotu painting; some rubbing and paint loss along painting edges; wear in frame includes chips to gesso, stains, scratches, and finish loss scattered throughout.
