A Composition Study in Red Pencil by Winold Reiss For the Baldwin Piano Mosaic

Item Details

A composition study in red pencil on manila paper by Winold Reiss (German, 1886-1953) for the Baldwin Piano Mosaic at Union Terminal in Cincinnati, Ohio. Reiss immigrated to the United States in 1913 and became well known for the plethora of portraits he did of Native Americans, particularly the Blackfeet tribe. His most outstanding commission, however, was 14 murals in The Cincinnati Union Terminal in 1933 to show the history of the city through its people. This red pencil drawing is a rough and very loose sketch illustrating two workers constructing a piano. The drawing is matted in white under glass in a thin gold frame. The hand-written notation to the back refers to the origin of the sketch and the artist.
