National Letter File Cabinet by John Morris Company, 19th Century

A National Letter File cabinet by the John Morris Company c. 19th Century. The rectangular top rests on two stacked dowel jointed drawers with oval metal label frames on the fronts. This oak cabinet stores letters flat and each drawer presents a metal device to hold papers in place and alphabetical dividers. The cover page to the dividers reads ‘INDEX FOR NATIONAL LETTER FILE. Patented January 8th, 1884. MANUFACTURED BY John Morris Company, CHICAGO ILLINOIS. For Sale by Stationers and Booksellers.’

- cabinet presents minor surface scratches and darkening to finish; second drawer label frame is detached but included; center of front edge molding has large area of loss; areas of nail head putty is missing on top surface; papers inside drawers has darkened.
