Antique Thai Chofa Carved Wood Finial
Item Details
An antique hand-carved wood Thai Chofa rooftop finial. The piece dates to the late Ayuthia (1350-1767) or early Bangkok period/Rattanakosin Kingdom (1782-1932). Chofa are meant to represent Garuda bird guardians, is a typical rooftop decoration throughout Thailand, and is rendered from carved wood with applied accents. This piece is does not have any visible maker’s marks.

Purchased in 1980 from La Sirena in San Antonio, Texas.

Condition
- deep cracks throughout; marks, scratches and chips to surface; a 16" segment of the bird’s crown is separated from the piece, but included for repair; left eye is missing.
