Verne Q. Powell (American; 1879-1968) was born into a family of silversmiths and began playing the flute as a child. While he was trained by his family in jewelry making, his interest in the flute and music continued to flourish. He crafted his first ‘spoon flute’ around 1910, which caught the attention of a Boston flute manufacturer, William S. Haynes. Powell worked for Haynes for several years, working his way up to shop foreman, and eventually struck out on his own, forming Verne Q. Powell Flutes, Inc. in 1927. He produced his sterling silver flutes until 1961, when he sold the company to four employees and retired in 1962. The company still exists today and is owned by Buffet Crampon.
