Item Details

Artist Unknown (20th century)
Untitled
Rolled paper
Unsigned

A rolled paper eagle sculpted by an undocumented Chinese immigrant who survived the mutiny aboard the Golden Venture cargo ship in June of 1993.
The eagle is comprised of rolled and folded found paper, glue, toothpaste, etc.

The Golden Venture carried nearly 300 immigrants from China when it ran aground in Queens, New York. The immigrants attempted escape but were captured and detained indefinitely while seeking asylum. While imprisoned, they collectively participated in an epic art project creating over 10,000 paper sculptures using the ancient art of Chinese paper folding and papier mâché.
