A hand-knotted Persian Archeological or Zirhaki Kashmar area rug. Zirhaki (‘under the earth’) is a type of pictorial Kashmar rug which represents items found in ancient archeological sites in Iran. This rug features an ivory floral medallion with urns, vases, and palmettes extending from its corners. The main red field is decorated with floral branches, leaves, and spandrels in a palette of ivory or cream, pink, indigo to azure, dark blue, mossy green, camel and grey-blue. The main dark blue border is strewn with more flowers and is framed by minor borders displaying meandering floral designs. The rug is finished with short cotton warp fringe and red hand-overcast selvedges. ‘Made in Iran’ label to the reverse.
