Born in Paris, Paul Jacoulet emigrated to Japan at age six and lived there for most of his life. He is celebrated for his synthesis of Japanese ukiyo-e and western influences in his woodblocks. He lived next-door to Yone Noguchi (1875-1947) and became good friends with his son, noted sculptor Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988). It is believed that Jacoulet only created about 166 different prints, many of which were destroyed. His work has been collected by numerous world leaders such as General Douglas MacArthur, Queen Elizabeth II, Pope Pius XI, and President Harry Truman. Institutions that have collected or displayed his work include the British Museum, the Asia Pacific Museum, and the Yokohama Art Museum, among others.
