A 1907 oil painting on canvas board by listed artist Francis Morton Johnson (Massachusetts/France; 1878 – 1931) . This Impressionist painting features a rugged coastline rendered in loose, impasto brushwork. It is signed and dated to the lower right. The work is housed in a dark gold-tone gesso frame.
Francis Morton Johnson was born in Waltham, Massachusetts, traveling to Paris in 1902 to study at the Academy Julian under Jean-Paul Laurens. He exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in 1907 and 1908, and at the also at the Salon des Indépendants every year between 1908 and 1914. Johnson is also known for inventing a device that recorded sound on motion pictures, receiving a patent in 1923.
