Pair of Directoire Style Parcel-Gilt and Painted Side Chairs, 20th Century

Item Details

Each green-painted frame features a parcel-gilt and cream splat with figural relief carvings of ‘Mars’ and ‘Ulisse’, respectively. The rush seats are further embellished with painted stripes and the versos of the front, seat rails are inscribed ‘13831’.

Provenance: According to the consignor, the chairs were purchased in Paris, France by Louise A. Mendel of Louisville, Kentucky, the owner of the Strassel Company (one of the city’s oldest and most well-known interior design firms).

Condition

- some minor wear to paint; tops of front legs with a couple shrinkage cracks and a couple small chips; some former pest damage (worming) with associated marks; splats with a few light shrinkage cracks; other surface wear and imperfections consistent with age and use; structurally stable.
