Oil on canvas
Signed and dated to lower right
An oil painting on canvas by contemporary Irish artist Ann Griffin-Bernstorff (20th/21st century), created in 1990. Portrayed in the artist’s signature style influenced by Sandro Botticelli (circa 1445 – 1510) and Old Master Flemish artists, this work features a whimsical forest scene with a young girl in a floral gown, amongst hooded falcons and a dog. Signed and dated to the lower right, this work is presented in a gold-tone gesso and wood frame with black and canvas liners.
In 1963, Ann Griffin-Bernstorff was awarded the Taylor Art Scholarship, allowing her to study in Paris at the Atelier Yves Brayer and Ecole des Beaux Arts. In addition to Italian, Flemish, and Dutch Masters of the early Renaissance, other artistic influences include her accumulated collection of costumes and antique dolls. Her unique compositions often exhibit overarching playful storybook elements featuring mythical creatures, and iconically rendered plump figures with fair skin and period attire. Griffin-Bernstorff’s work has been exhibited internationally and collected by multiple institutions including the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the National Self Portrait Collection in Ireland, and the University of Limerick and the Lambert Modern Art Collection, among others.
