Titled and inscribed to verso
An oil painting on board titled Sketch by listed American artist Maud Morgan (1903 – 1999), created circa 1952. This work features an Abstract Expressionist composition rendered with textural splotches of various vibrant colors and gestural black delineations. No visible signature was found on the work. It is presented in a black wood frame with an off-white liner. Adhered to the verso are descriptive labels from the Margaret Brown Gallery and the Pioneer Valley Association, indicating that this work was submitted to the Association’s First Jury Show of 1952.
Born in New York City, Maud Morgan received her B.A. from Barnard College, and continued her studies at the Art Students League. As an Abstract Expressionist, she worked with Hans Hofmann and exhibited her work with several prominent Modernists including Alexander Calder, Mark Rothko, and Jackson Pollock, and her husband Patrick Morgan, among others. Her work has been exhibited and collected by numerous prestigious institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Addison Gallery of American Art, to name a few.
