An oil painting on canvas titled Balloon Vendor by Ohio-based artist Clarence Klatt (20th century), created in 1964. Portrayed in a post-impressionistic manner with vibrant colors and rough textural impasto, this work features a transient fair scene filled with colorful balloons. Signed and dated “C Klatt 64” to the lower left, the work is also signed, titled, dated, and inscribed to the verso. A descriptive entry label and an inscription to the board verso indicate that this work won first prize at the 1964 Clark County Fair. A stamp from Klatt’s Welding & Blacksmith Shop is also marked to the verso. The painting is presented in a wood frame with a tan finish.
Based in New Carlisle, Clarence Klatt was a third generation of blacksmiths in his family and he continued to run the family business after his father’s death,. However, in addition to blacksmithing, he enjoyed painting and became particularly celebrated for his colorful paintings of landscapes and fairs. Klatt studied at the Dayton Art Institute on a scholarship, and exhibited his work along Route 69, the Clark County Fair, and other local venues.
