Aurion Proctor 1949 Oil Painting of the Talgo Train

Item Details

Aurion Proctor (American; 1909 – 1983)
Untitled, 1949
Oil on canvas
Signed and dated to lower right

A large-scale oil painting on canvas by listed American artist Aurion Proctor (1909 – 1983), created in 1949. Rendered from a dramatic angled perspective, this work features a 1949 Talgo (Tren Articulado Ligero Goicoechea Oriol) train built by American Car & Foundry (ACF) under a contract for the Spanish Government. The train rides a picturesque landscape with large rock formations and radiant multi-colored sky. The work is signed and dated ‘’49’ to the lower right. It is presented in a beveled wood frame with a gray finish.

The Talgo was one of the first extreme lightweight streamliners in the postwar period. This painting may have been a commission by American Car & Foundry for a mid 20th-century advertisement. The artist Aurion Proctor illustrated several covers for Railroad Magazine in the 1940s and was based in New York.
