An oil painting on canvas titled The Creek by Ohio-based artist Clarence Klatt (20th century), created in 1961. Portrayed in an impressionistic manner with vibrant colors and rough textural impasto, this hazy landscape features a stream surrounded by a grassy bank and autumnal trees. The work is signed and dated “C Klatt 61” to the lower left. It is also signed, dated, titled, and inscribed to the verso, indicating the the work was first painted in 1958 and repainted in 1961. A descriptive label and a stamp from Klatt’s Welding & Blackmith Shop are present to the verso along with an entry label. The painting is pesented in a wood frame with a beige finish.
Based in New Carlisle, Clarence Klatt was a third generation of blacksmiths in his family and he continued to run the family business after his father’s death,. However, in addition to blacksmithing, he enjoyed painting and became particularly celebrated for his colorful paintings of landscapes and fairs. Klatt studied at the Dayton Art Institute on a scholarship, and exhibited his work along Route 69, the Clark County Fair, and other local venues.
