Mary Louise McLaughlin, one of the original innovators behind the art pottery movement in the United States during the late 19th century, was born to a wealthy family in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1847. Showing an interest in art from an early age, she studied porcelain painting under Benn Pitman at the Cincinnati School of Design in 1874. She went on to open a pottery studio in Cincinnati, eventually becoming the main competitor of the famed Rookwood Pottery, also based in Cincinnati. After viewing the work of Haviland & Co. of France at an exposition in Pennsylvania, she returned home to experiment with their method underglaze painting, pioneering the technique in America. In 1879 McLaughlin founded the Cincinnati Pottery Club, the first of its kind in America.
