Alexander Porfyrovych Archipenko was a Ukrainian-born American avant-garde artist, sculptor, and graphic artist classically trained in Kiev and Paris during his early years before delving into Cubism. Archipenko departed from traditional neo-classical sculpture of his contemporaries and used faceted planes and negative space to create a new way of displaying the human figure. Archipenko is known for introducing sculptural voids, and for his innovative mixing of genres within his pieces. He was the first, after Picasso, to employ Cubism in a three dimensional manner and was exhibited at the first public showing of Cubism in Paris at the Salon des Indépendants and Salon d’Automne in 1910 and 1911. In 1936, Archipenko participated in an exhibit of Cubism and Abstract Art in New York, City and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1962. Alexander Archipenko died in 1964 in New York City where he is interred in Woodlawn Cemetery.
