Three Circa 1960's Mark J. Scearce Sterling Silver Presidential Mint Julep Cups

Item Details

A set of three sterling silver presidential mint julep cups by renowned silversmith Mark J. Scearce of Shelbyville, Kentucky. Each being cylindrical and slightly tapered with a finely beaded band at the top and bottom rim then impressed with an eagle and date mark corresponding to the current President in office at the time the cups were created. Two cups bear the initials JFK (John F Kennedy) and the third LBJ (Lyndon b Johnson).
Mark J Scearce distinguished his mint julep cups in this manner as a nod to the British hallmarking system, thus making them sought by collectors. Traditionally, each President received a cup bearing his initials and interestingly, all but one president sent personal thank you notes. Upon his presidency, Lyndon B Johnson became one of Scearce’s best customers ordering 650 sterling mint julep cups in a very short turn around time to be given as Christmas gifts. The delivery of the cups were made not only on time, but actually one day early.
