An oil painting on canvas titled Yacht Yard Landing – Marblehead, Mass. by listed artist John Rettig (Cincinnati, Ohio/Netherlands; 1855 – 1932). the painting depicts several small wooden fishing boats docked in a wide bay. The painting is signed to the lower right and presented in a wooden frame with a white linen liner, gold tone finish, and a hanging wire attached to the verso. Gallery tags from Bonfoey Gallery and Anthony Ralph Gallery are attached to the verso.

John Rettig studied art at the McMicken School of Design in Cincinnati, graduating in 1881. He continued his studies at the Art Academy of Cincinnati under the highly acclaimed masters Frank Duveneck (1848 – 1919) and Edward Henry Potthast (1857 – 1927), before studying in Europe. Rettig returned to work as a decorator for the famed Rookwood Pottery alongside his younger brother Martin Rettig, and was the president of the Cincinnati Art Club from 1890 to 1892 and again from 1908 to 1910. Though he worked as a painter, sculptor and muralist, he was best known during his lifetime for his ‘spectacles’, which were multimedia exhibitions executed on such a grand scale that they were written about in newspapers in New York and Boston. Rettig’s paintings are represented in private and public collections around the world, and have been exhibited by numerous institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cincinnati Art Museum, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others. Additionally, the artist and his painting of the Crucifixion received major acknowledgment in Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Deadeye Dick (1982).
