Signed to lower right
An oil painting on canvas titled Snowy Landscape with Creek by listed Ohio artist Matthew Daly (1860 – 1937). This painting is mounted in an early 20th-century Arts & Crafts carved wood frame with a natural stained finish.
A Cincinnati native, Daly studied under Thomas S. Noble and Vincent Nowottny at the McMicken School of Design. As he increasingly turned to portraiture and the human figure as his primary subjects, he later studied under the formidable Frank Duveneck. When Duveneck left Cincinnati in the 1970s, Daly remained and worked as an artist for the Rookwood Pottery Company for 20 years, while continuing to create paintings and participate in exhibitions. He died at his easel at the age of 77.
