Exceptional Antique Hand-Knotted Lavar Kerman Pictorial Silk Rug, 19th Century

Item Details

An antique, finely hand-knotted inscribed Persian Lavar Kerman 100% silk rug, circa 1850. It has natural dyes with a fine knot count. It prominently features a large central portrait medallion of ‘Keyumars,’ the Persian form of the Zoroastrian name (Persian کیومرث‎), in Persian versions of mythological history as the first Shah of the world, law giver, or the first Shah to bring law and justice to the world, referenced in the Shahnameh. Keyumars holds the ‘staff of Moses,’ the staff which in literature turned into the serpent which defeated Pharaoh’s army, representing strength and power. The intricately detailed field has a red to magenta field, having a central image of Keyumars enclosed in an ogival medallion, surrounded by ornately patterned vine work and floral elements and open flower blossoms. The name of Keyumars is inscribed next to the portrait. Flanking the portrait are images of peri, winged creatures represented as messengers which, in literature, delivered warning messages to Keyumars; large birds, an ox, and climbing monkeys, often seen in similar imagery. Floral meander guard borders surround the central image, having a blue ground, framing a wide, detailed primary border of hunting leopards and gazelle in dynamic poses, with large floral bouquets. Finishing the rug are overcast selvedges with cut and hand bound warp ends. Accompanying the rug is a a full appraisal with provenance information.
