A monumental oil painting on canvas by Chinese-American artist Esther Liu (b. 1950), created in the late 20th century. Portrayed in an expressionist manner with sweeping gestural brushstrokes and vibrant pigments, this work features intertwining abstracted figures. The work is signed and inscribed to the canvas verso. One inscription to the verso, ‘O十二七日八O年’, specifically dates the work ‘December 7, 1980’. The painting remains unframed.
Known for her Abstract Expressionist composition, Esther Liu studied art at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada and at NYU in New York City. She was a member of the EPOXY Art Group, a collective group of artists hailing from Hong Kong and China active in New York in the 1980s and 1990s. A solo exhibition featuring her work was held by the Pao Gallery at the Hong Kong Arts Centre.
