An antique oil portrait on canvas of a gentleman by listed Austrian artist Heinrich von Angeli (1840 – 1925). This nearly full-length portrait features a three-quarter view of a seated elite gentleman gazing off to the right, portrayed with smooth chiaroscuro. Unsigned, the work is presented in a Louis XV style gilt and gesso frame with foliate motifs and undulating edges. A metal plate bearing the artist’s name is affixed to the lower center of the frame. A label with an illegible inscription is adhered to the frame verso.
Heinrich von Angeli was a celebrated portrait and history painter who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He has painted portraits of many prominent historical figures including Queen Victoria, Kaiser Wilhelm I, Benjamin Disraeli, and Princess Beatrice of the United Kingdom, to name a few. Von Angeli’s work can be found multiple elite institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Royal Collection, and the Wallace Collection, among others.
