Eight George II Style Oak and Walnut Chairs with Hide Seats, 20th Century

A set of eight George II style oak and walnut dining chairs with hide seats, 20th century. The set includes two open armchairs and six side chairs featuring yoke crests with incurvate, carved corners above vertical, walnut-inlaid splats with ebony stringing. The padded, slip seats have been custom-upholstered in later, black hide with leather piping by Mike Bell, Inc. of Chicago, Illinois (see labels on undersides) while the front seat rails are further embellished with inlaid panels. The chairs rise on acanthus-carved, cabriole legs in the front ending in ball-and-claw feet.

- variable wear to hide upholstery with fur loss as well as light cracking and fading to underlying leather; one chair is missing a knee return while another is missing two knee returns; some glue reinforcements to leg joints and replaced/missing corner blocks beneath seats; other various scratches, dents, marks, and abrasions consistent with age and use; structurally stable.
