Item Details

Francisco Sainz (New York/Connecticut/Spain; 1923 – 1998)
Mother and Child, 1955
Oil on canvas
Signed and dated to lower right
Inscribed to verso

An original 1955 oil painting on canvas by well-listed artist Francisco Sainz (New York/Connecticut/Spain; 1923 – 1998), titled Mother and Child. This Modernist Folk work depicts a mother seated before a flower-adorned wall, cradling her baby, as both of them gaze with wide, curious eyes toward the viewer. Artist signature and date are signed to the lower right, and are also marked to the verso with the title of the piece. This painting is housed in a simple wooden slat-style frame, equipped to hang.

Sainz fought in the Spanish Civil War as a teenager and began his studies in painting while living in Barcelona. He moved to New York after World War II to continue pursuing his artistic endeavors, and befriended many New York School painters, including Willem de Kooning, Lester Johnson and Alfred Leslie. His artistic style developed during the 1950s, which exhibited raw, unpolished flamboyance of the Abstract Expressionist movement, but was ultimately steeped in traditional portraiture and Spanish Folk art.
