Signed in graphite to lower right
A mixed media painting on paper by listed American artist Carolyn Young Hisel (Kentucky, 1942 – 2017). This painting features a boy and a girl, both with outstretched arms, in the midst of an ambiguous game. The bold, vibrant color, and areas of sketch-like linework contribute to the dynamic sense of movement across the composition. This work is signed to the lower right. It is presented behind an ivory linen mat, in a gold-tone beveled wood frame.
Carolyn Young Hisel grew up in Lexington, Kentucky where her grandmother taught her to draw and paint while exposing her to the representational paintings of centuries past. She developed a view of the art world that was challenged when she arrived at the University of Kentucky and discovered modern painting and abstract expressionism. The juxtaposition of these two artistic ideas has continued to shape her work throughout her career, her abstractions usually containing a figurative aspect and a narrative quality. Her work has been widely exhibited throughout the Southeast, including a retrospective at the Headley-Whitney Museum, Lexington, in 1989.
