Levon West was born in 1900 in North Dakota, moving often during his childhood, and eventually graduating from the University of Minnesota with a degree in business administration before serving in the U.S. navy during WWI. He finally settled in New York City, and studied at the Art Student’s League with etcher Joseph Pennell. West had an interest in aviation, and gained notoriety after his etching of Charles Lindberg’s plane The Spirit of Saint Louis appeared on the front page of the New York Times. West, known for his etchings and watercolors, also worked as a photographer under the pseudonym Ivan Dmitri. Under this name he diligently worked to promote the acceptance of photography as a fine art medium, establishing one of the first photography exhibits at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and founding Photography in the Fine Arts in 1959. West’s work resides in many museum collections, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, the Brooklyn Museum and the Havemeyer Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
