Item Details

Allen Tucker (American; 1866-1939)
Untitled
Oil on canvas
Signed to lower left
Illegibly titled and inscribed to verso

An oil painting on canvas of an autumnal landscape by well-listed American artist Allen Tucker (1866-1939). Portrayed in a post-impressionist manner with thick brushstrokes, patches of vibrant pigments, and textural impasto, this work features a landscape in Maine with three prominent trees in a grassy terrain. Signed to the lower left, the work is illegibly titled and inscribed to the verso, part of which reads Painted by Allen Tucker / “………………” / ………………. / From Mrs. George …. / ……… / Castine / Maine. It is presented in a gray painted wood frame.

Influence by Vincent van Gogh, Robert Henri, and Maurice Prendergast, Allen Tucker was a painter and architect referred to as the ‘Vincent in America’. He obtained a degree in architecture from the School of Mines of Columbia University and worked as an architectural draftsman in his father’s firm. Later, he studied painting with John H. Twachtman at the Art Students League, and turned to painting full-time in 1904. Tucker helped organize the 1913 Armory Show as a charter member of the Association of American Painters and Sculptors, and later, in his continued rebellion against traditionalism, partook as a founder of the Society of Independent Artists. His work has been collected by numerous institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
