A collection of four 19th century albumen photographs of Ohio scenes by Cincinnati-based photographer E.J. Carpenter (19th century). Included in this collection are photographs of Ohio River sternwheel packet boats Scotia and Andes. All photos are unsigned and mounted on off-white surfaces. They are presented under glass in oak frames, three of which are matching with black composite liners, and one of which have a silver-tone liner. ‘E.J. Carpenter’ is embossed to the lower right margin of one mat.

E. J. Carpenter was an amateur landscape photographer, active in Cincinnati (Hamilton) in the early 1880s. According to the Enquirer, he made a specialty of Ohio River scenes (Cincinnati Enquirer, July 23, 1883). A collection of Carpenter’s Ohio River photographs are held in the collections of the Herman T. Pott National Inland Waterways Library at the University of Missouri – St. Louis.

Condition

- one photograph is blistering and torn in the center; edges of photos have been irregularly cut; small minor marks throughout photographs; stains and marks throughout mats; wear throughout frames includes stains, scratches, and finish loss scattered throughout.
