An oil painting on heavy paper titled Hydra by contemporary American artist Robert Kelly (b. 1958), created in 1982. This work features jagged geometric shapes portrayed with thick brushstrokes and textural impasto. The work is mounted on a white surface, presented under acrylic, and housed in a simple wood frame. It is signed, titled, and dated to the verso on a label from Stanhope Framers, Inc. An additional descriptive label from Clark Gallery is adhered to the verso.

Born in New Mexico, Robert Kelly earned his B.A. at Harvard University in 1978. Before devoting his time to painting in 1982, he worked as a commercial photograph for Polaroid in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and completed residencies at The MacDowell Colony and The Károlyi Foundation, in Vence, France. Some of his artistic influences include the De Stijl movement, Kurt Schwitters, Lydia Clark, Helio Oticia, Hans Arp, Louise Bourgeois, and Ellsworth Kelly, to name a few. His work has been collected by numerous prestigious institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe, among many others.
