An oil painting on canvas titled Spring by listed Japanese artist Hiroshi Asada (1931-1997), created in 1987. This semi surrealist work is signed ‘Asada, H’ to the lower right. It is also signed in calligraphic script and dated to the verso. The painting is presented in a gold-tone gesso and wood frame with black painted liner. A label from Galerie Tamenaga is adhered to the stretcher bar verso.

Hiroshi Asada pursued a career in painting after studying economics at Kyoto’s Doshisha University. He comes from a family of renowned nihonga artists, including his father Asada Benji and his brother Asada Takashi. However, he was very influenced by Western style painting, particularly Flemish and Dutch landscapes and still lifes. Asada is known for incorporating surreal elements in his meticulously rendered compositions. A retrospective of his work was held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, to commemorate the ten-year anniversary of his death.
