An oil painting on canvas by very well-listed American painter Thomas Corwin (T.C.) Lindsay (Ohio; 1839 – 1907). The painting is a unique departure from Lindsay’s usual body of work, depicting a wooded landscape prominently featuring a large elk looking out over a reflective river. The painting is signed to the lower right. It is presented in a wooden frame with a hanging wire to the verso.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Thomas Lindsay was a well-known painter of landscapes, animal subjects and occasionally portraits. He displayed an interest in painting from an early age and took to the act of expression quite naturally. He studied in Dusseldorf, Germany then returned to Cincinnati in 1857 where he taught students in his Fourth Street studio and made an earnest living from the sale of his masterful landscapes. Lindsay’s work has been collected and exhibited by the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and other institutions.
