A late 19th century oil painting on canvas of an autumnal landscape by Ohio-based artist Thomas Corwin Lindsay (1839-1907). Portrayed in a slightly tonalist manner, this work features a cottage with a watermill along the bank of a rocky creek, surrounded by multi-colored trees and foliage. The work is signed ‘T.C. Lindsay’ to the lower left and presented in a gilt and gesso wood frame with foliate motifs.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Thomas Lindsay was a well-known painter of landscapes, animal subjects and occasionally portraits. He displayed an interest in painting from an early age and took to the act of expression quite naturally. He studied in Dusseldorf, Germany then returned to Cincinnati in 1857 where he taught students in his Fourth Street studio and made an earnest living from the sale of his masterful landscapes. Lindsay’s work has been collected and exhibited by the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and other institutions.

- one-inch puncture presente to lower center area of canvas; craquelure throughout painting; small spots of accretionvisible throughout upper half of painting; some wear in frame includes small chips, stains, scratches, and finish loss scattered throughout.
