Charles Meurer Early 20th Century Impressionist Landscape Oil Painting

Item Details

Charles Meurer (American; 1865 – 1955)
Untitled, early 20th century
Oil on canvas
Signed “CA Meurer” to lower right

An early 20th century oil painting on canvas of an impressionist landscape by Ohio-based artist Charles Meurer (1865 – 1955). This work features a river bank scene populated with autumnal trees, foliage, and a small abandoned wood boat. The work is signed ‘CA Meurer’ to the lower right. It is presented in a gold-tone gesso and wood frame.

Born in Germany to American parents, Charles Meurer was raised in Tennessee and eventually settled in Terrace Park, Ohio, where he maintained a studio until his death in 1955. He was proclaimed “the last living member of the great school of American Trompe L’oeil.” He had studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy under Frank Duveneck, as well as in France at the Academy Julian and Ecole des Beaux-Arts. However, it was seeing the work of Michael Harnett at the Cincinnati Industrial Exposition of 1886 that inspired his exploration of Trompe L’Oeil. His work My Passport, painted the year of Harnett’s death, won honorable mention at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair and established his national reputation.
