A Chinese Qing dynasty (1644-1911) parcel-gilt and painted three-drawer chest, 19th century. The red- and black-painted, hardwood case features a rectangular top with molded edges above two aligned over one dovetailed drawer. The raised, gilt fronts are ornately-carved with floral branches and birds against black backgrounds with applied, mirrored tesserae. The fronts are further carved with meander reliefs along the edges and the drawers are fitted with wire handles. Additionally, the side panels are decorated with floral stencils and fitted with iron handles. The chest rises on a molded base.

Condition

- to fair; top with stains and paint losses as well as a shrinkage crack running the full width; drawer fronts with some loose and missing mirrored tesserae; back of case with a later strip of wood just below lip of top; probably had feet and a skirt at one time (now missing); other various scratches, dents, chips, marks, and abrasions consistent with age and use; structurally stable.
