Late 19th-Century Fischer J. Hungarian Reticulated Ceramic Ewer

A late 19th-century Fischer J. reticulated ceramic ewer, Budapest, Hungary. This hand-painted antique piece features an ivory colored ground embellished with diminutive yellow centered blue flowers and gilded accents throughout. It is comprised of a pinched spout, an applied handle of ornate design, a reticulated body and spout, and brief pedestal base. The underside bears a deep emerald hallmark alongside the impressed form number ‘2061’.
Fischer J. Budapest was founded by Ignáce Fischer in Pest, Hungary, in 1864. (Pest is the eastern half of modern Budapest which was united with the ewestern half, Buda, in 1873). A former Herend artist, Fischer eventually became a supplier to the Imperial and Royal Austro-Hungarian Court. The company was in operation under his son until it was purchased by Zsolnay Pottery in 1895.
