Paul Maxwell Geometric Print

Item Details

Paul Maxwell (American; 1925 -2015)
Untitled (abstract), 1988
Stencil-cast print on paper
Signed to lower left

A 1988 stencil-cast print on paper by listed American artist Paul Maxwell (1925 – 2015). This geometric print was created through Maxwell’s patented process ‘stencil- casting’ which has since become known as ‘Maxwell Pochoir’. This process is similar to silk screening, and allows for thick, textured and layered surfaces rendered with precise control and with no limits on size. This work is signed and dated to the lower left. It is mounted to a white background, and is housed under glass in a white acrylic frame.

Maxwell was born in Frost Prairie, Arkansas in 1925 and always asserted that his forms and textures were probably inspired by the vast unbroken landscape there. He graduated from high school in Louisiana, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts from Principia College in Illinois. He completed some graduate work at Claremont College in California, and while there had his first museum show in Stockton, California. In 1951 Maxwell’s work was included in an exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art alongside works of Picasso, Miro and Matta. His work has since been exhibited across the United States, Europe, Australia and Asia.
