1919 William DeVeaux Foulke Full-Size Violin with Bow

A 1919 full-size violin made by luthier Captain William DeVeaux Foulke with bow. This semi-antique violin features a spruce top with maple single-piece back, sides, neck and deeply carved scroll. It includes an ebonized tailpiece and fingerboard and is presented with a wood and horsehair bow. The maker’s information is handwritten in black ink and placed directly on the wood, visible through the bass sound hole. It reads ‘Wm. de V. Foulke, Phila, Pa, 1919, #56’.

Foulke (American, 1852-1932) was a luthier and competitive rifle shooter, attaining the rank of Captain in the Pennsylvania National Guard. He was the son of William Parker Foulke, who discovered the first full dinosaur skeleton in North America.
