An early 19th-century map lithograph fully titled Oceanique. Partie de la Nlle Galles du Sud. No. 55 by Belgian cartographer Philippe Vandermaelen (1795-1869). This lithograph is one of the maps included in Vandermaelen’s six-volume Atlas Universel, published in 1827. The map is presented under glass with off-white matting and housed in a gesso and wood frame. A label from The Map House is adhered to the verso.

Philippe Vandermaelen was a self-taught cartographer referred to as the ‘Mercator of young Belgium’. His most famous work was the Atlas Universel, a six-volume large-scale atlas, which was the first to be produced with the new printing process of lithography. The volumes consist of approximately 380 sheets of maps and forty pages of statistical tables. Vandermaelen was also famous for establishing the scientific and cultural institution in Belgium called Etablissement Géographique de Bruxelles. In this institution, he developed the branches of natural and social sciences, including geography, botany, zoology, anatomy, statistics, ethnography, chemistry, physics, geology, and overseas expeditions, among others.
