1660 Publication of a Map of New Netherland and New England

Item Details

An unframed 1660 publication of a map after Dutch cartographer Guiljelmo (or Willem) Blaeuw (or Blaeu), titled Nova Belgica et Anglia Nova or New Netherland and New England. The map was originally done by Blaeu in 1635 as part of his Novus Atlas and published after his death. This map depicts what is today the east/northeast coast of the United States, from southern Canada to Virigina and including lands which were at that time New England, New Netherland, and New France. It is oriented with the west at the top as this orientation would have been most useful in navigation along the coast. It features hand-tinted borders as well as illustrations of native animals and a fortified Mahican village, with European ships and American Indian canoes off the coast. American Indian group names such as: Horicans, Irocoisia, Morhicans, Pequatoos and others are noted as well as colonial settlements including: Plymouth, New Amsterdam, and Quebec. Text is in a mixture of Dutch and Latin, the the scale is demarcated in German miles.
