An oil painting on academy board by listed Ohio artist Martin Rettig (1869 – 1956). This work features a wooded landscape painted with a limited, earthy palette. Tree trunks rendered in loose vertical brushwork contrast with the staccato marks used to portray the leaves and the forest floor, creating a dynamic tension across the composition. The work is signed to the lower right and is housed in a gilt wood frame.

Martin Rettig was born in 1869 in Cincinnati, Ohio to a German beer brewer, and was the younger brother of artist John Rettig (1855 – 1932). He studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy, under Frank Duveneck (1848 – 1919) and began his career as a decorator at the famed Rookwood Pottery from 1882 – 1885. There he was known for his Japanesque style design work typical of the pottery at the time. Rettig went on to become a prolific painter, focusing on floral oil paintings, and he was the president of the Cincinnati Art Club from 1918 – 1920.
