A 20th century brass sculpture in the form of a rooster from Benin. This majestic sculpture features incised detailing to the feathers and crown as well as decorative latticework to the base. Brass roosters were placed on ancestral alters to memorialize the queen mothers of Benin; they represented the animals that would have been sacrificed in their honor.

Condition

- dust and residue from age; deterioration of brass to the base and tail; some repairs to brass visible to the chest and tail; minor warping to brass.
