Jean-Jacques Henner was born in Alsace, France, which is featured in many of his early works. He is well-known for naturalistic portrait, historical, religious, and landscape paintings influenced by Titian and Raphael as well as Ingres and Corot. Henner studied at the studios of Drolling and Picot at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1858. The majority of Henner’s work is housed in the Musée Jean-Jacques Henner in Paris.
