Kataro Shirayamadani 1900 Rookwood Baluster Vase No. 614B

Item Details

An important piece by Rookwood’s best artist Kataro Shirayamadani (Japan 1865–1948). Interesting Rookwood vase with flared opening and tapered to bottom. Glaze is a dark blackish gray color graduating to a glossy mustard yellow. Flowers are beautifully rendered, and may be poppy or hibiscus. Rookwood mark on bottom has 14 flames, indicating year 1900. There is an ‘X’ marked on the bottom (possible second?) and what may be an incised artist’s signature. Incised number 614B. There is a large patch of bubbled glaze on the body of the vase, and a few shallow chips to top edge. On the top shoulder there are two pairs of quarter-size circles where there is no glaze at all; these areas are a dark brown (apparently this piece was originally to have been made into a lamp).

Condition

There is a large patch of bubbled glaze on the body of the vase, and a few shallow chips to top edge. Also some glaze “pops” and crazing. On the top shoulder there are two pairs of quarter-size circles where there is no glaze at all; these areas are a dark brown.

Dimensions

Vase is 7" wide at shoulder. Top opening is 4.5" wide; base is 4.5" in diameter.
