A graphite drawing on paper by famed French artist Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899). This work features a sketch of a figure on horseback, stamped ‘Rosa B-’ to the lower right. The work is presented under glass, double-matted, and housed in a gold-tone wood frame. A frame label is adhered to the verso.
Considered the most famous female painter of 19th-century France, Rosa Bonheur was trained by her father who was a landscape painter. She is renowned for her realistic animal and rural landscape paintings, which she regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon. Significantly, she was commissioned by the Second Republic and highly regarded by French Empress Eugénie de Montijo and Queen Victoria. Some of her most famous works can be viewed in the Louvre Museum, the Musée d’Orsay, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
