George III Mahogany Secretaire Bookcase, Late 18th Century

Item Details

A George III mahogany secretaire bookcase, late 18th century. The two-part case features an upper section with a dentil-molded, broken-arch cornice above side panels with brass, bail handles. To the front is a pair of mirrored doors over candle slides and the doors open to a divided interior with adjustable shelves. The projecting, lower section features a strip of mid-molding above a stack of three cockbeaded and dovetailed, long drawers with brass, bail handles and oak linings. The top, secrétaire drawer has a hinged, fall front concealing a row of pigeonholes and drawers as well as a central, prospect door and a brown, leather writing surface with tooled edges. The whole piece rises on a molded, bracket base. Also included are two keys. The top and bottom case sections are possibly associated.

- to fair; top and bottom sections possibly associated as evidenced by the finished top of the lower section and the applied molding; doors re-fitted with old mirrored glass while the original, mahogany panels have been flipped to the backside; candleslides and prospect door show evidence of being later; cornice possibly had a central finial at one time; some foxing and silvering losses to mirrored door panels; top of lower section with some stains; secrétaire drawer front slightly bowed and with a small repair to lower, left corner; leather writing surface probably later; bottom drawer missing interior lock plate; other various scratches, chips, marks, and abrasions consistent with age and use; structurally stable; comes with a working key to upper doors and to middle drawer of lower section; also included is a working key to the prospect door.
