Qing Dynasty Carved Nephrite Jade Plaque with Persimmons, Lilies and Lingzhi

Item Details

Untitled, 19th century
Nephrite Jade
Unsigned

A finely reticulated carved 19th century Qing dynasty (1644-1911) Chinese miniature plaque, possibly an ornamental piece from a larger object. The plaque displays two figures in animated poses among arabesque branches with persimmons (柿 shi), lilies (百合 baihe), and lingzhi fungus (靈芝 lingzhi). Together, these elements form a rebus meaning ‘may one hundred things be as you wish’ (百事如意 baishi ruyi). The artist has achieved an intricate level of dimensionality with the figures and foliage in the foreground enhanced with tendrils and vining in the background.
